It is a weekly email devotional series introducing the best wisdom of some overlooked Christian mystics.
Overlooked Figures from Church History
Monday Morning Devotions
John of the Cross
16th Century Spanish Poet and Spiritual Director from the 1500s.
A master of spiritual direction, the Dark Night of the Soul, and the romancing of God.
Meister Eckhart
14th Century German Preacher.
He was a rebellious thinker who chose to disobey the Church of his day and preach in the ordinary German. He is the best example of praying with a non-dual spirituality.
Thomas Merton
20th Century Trappist Monk from Kentucky.
An impressive writer of social ethics, war, spiritual formation, and inter-religious dialogue.
After hearing people quote them, I fell into the Christian Mystics but never had the chance to study them. So, while doing the Appalachian Trail, I read as many as possible and fell in love with their wisdom. Since then, I have done what I can to help share their wisdom with anyone who will listen!
It is my sincere belief that what we need is a return to the Christian mystics. In the words of Karl Rahner, "The Christian of the future will be a mystic, or they will not be at all!"
